Since 2009, from a home ceramics studio in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Japanese artist Yumi Ando has hand-crafted intricately decorated lustre necklaces and earrings, curious bunny broaches, miniature plant hangers, faceted geometric forms and more. Inspired by the natural world and industrial forms, whilst also drawing on her Japanese heritage, each piece comes to life one at a time. Her delicate designs are a unique cultural fusion, and each tells personal story about her surroundings and interests.

Shaped from porcelain, earthernware and raku, all her works are formed, decorated, kiln fired and assembled by hand. Her pastel and traditional Japanese colors; indigo blue, matcha green and sakura pink were first hand tinted in 2010. She has been making lustre decorated jewellery and homewares since 2011, both her lustre work and colours now part of and O design’s signature style, which has become a trend in itself.

From 2017 to July 2023, she made a new home in Canberra, Australia’s bush capital. Yumi enjoyed regular walks in the bush, luckily minutes from her home studio with Kangaroos hopping around and a beautiful sunset every day. She has recently returned to Melbourne and now looks forward to continuing her work in Australia’s most creative city.

We hope these creations bring you as much joy, as they have for her to create.
